35+ things to do in Kyushu, Japan! Kyushu is Japan's third largest island, located southwest of the main island Honshu and is made up of seven prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Oita, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Kagoshima. It's also one of my favourite regions in Japan and such an underrated and undiscovered region. Here are some of my recommendations for first-time visitors! It's best to stay 2-3 days in each prefecture so you can take your time to explore! I've included everything from nature spots, activities/experiences, Japanese food, to things to do at night in the list! I had so much fun filming and exploring Kyushu - it really had everything I wanted all in one region! Hot springs for when you want to relax, nature for when you want to escape the city, activities for all ages, and also delicious fresh food! Hope you can check out some of these places the next time you visit Kyushu as well! ❐ P L A C E S M E N T I O N E D ❏ 1.Beppu City: 🤍 - Forest Adventure Beppu - SELECT BEPPU - Yukemuri Observatory - Hell Steaming Workshop KANNAWA - Kannawa Steam Bath - Beppu Jigoku Tour - Beppu Kannawa Akariya Togetsu Hotel 2. A year ago we decided to partake on a 3 day road trip adventure on the island of Kyushu, travelling from Beppu all the way to Kumamoto along the picturesque Yamanami Highway. To celebrate the trip's one year anniversary and because we are still staying home to flatten the curve, we decided to release a long video of footage taken back then. Hopefully this allows you to travel directly from the comfort of your house. Learn more about Kyushu: 🤍 Learn more about the details of this trip: 🤍
Things to do in Kyushu, the southern-most of Japan's main island, full of volcanic activity, hot springs and interesting places to visit - and cute fruit bus stops! I really enjoyed visiting Kyushu when I stayed in Fukuoka and went on day trips around the island. But there was lots I missed! With the new branch of the shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagasaki opening late 2022, it's a great time to go. This video's a round-up of ideas for your second/third/fourth Japan trip, including Nagasaki, Shimabara (City of Swimming Carp), Huis Ten Bosch, Kumamoto (for Kumamon hunting!), Yutoku Inari Shrine, Yufuin near Beppu, Mount Aso, the Unzen Hells and Mount Unzen, another active volcano in Japan. * MY JAPAN TRAVEL GUIDE BOOK: 🤍 * SUBSCRIBE for Japan videos every other Thursday. * CAKES WITH FACES MERCH: (Worldwide shipping): 🤍 🤍 * FOLLOW CAKES WITH FACES: 🤍 🤍 🤍 Music created with Jukedeck. Kyushu, Japan’s third largest and southernmost island, is a cultural collection of natural beauty, historic charm, spiritual connections, world-renowned sake breweries, and much more. The island’s seven prefectures, while unique in their destinations and offerings, are connected by an ever-present air of enchantment. Kyushu is also a convenient place to travel as it is one of the best connected travel hubs in Japan, making domestic and international travel worry free. Immerse yourself in the spiritual environment of Takachiho, Miyazaki, a town that is considered to be the birthplace of Japan. The area’s rustic charm is pervasive throughout the island. From Kitsuki City’s samurai houses to Kumamoto castle to the Edo-styled buildings of Yanagawa City, Kyushu’s traditional architecture will transport you to the past. Complementary to the island’s buildings are its artisan glass and pottery. Visit Kagoshima to behold the rare Satsuma Kiriko glassware, and visit Arita City to purchase some Arita yaki porcelain. In Nagasaki prefecture, learn about historic, yet somber events at the Twenty-Six Martyrs Museum and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. All the while, enjoy Kyushu’s natural beauty including stunning views of Kujukushima, which translates to “99 islands,” from Nagasaki’s coast and Mount Aso, an active volcano in Kumamoto. Later, relax in one of Oita prefecture’s thousands of hot springs or unwind in the steam sand baths of Ibusuki, Kagohimsa. Kyushu also has no shortage of delicious eats. In Saga prefecture, pair your food with some sake, and in Miyazaki, sample the internationally acclaimed Kuri Kuro, or dark chestnut ale. Lose yourself on this unforgettable island. More: 🤍

Language Kyushu is home to dialects of Japanese that are almost incomprehensible to speakers of standard Japanese -so much so that it was utilised during World War 2 for preventing interception by the Allies of Japanese communications. Even native speakers of Japanese from Honshu often have problems understanding the conversations of locals. However, all people are able to speak standard Japanese and especially in the cities younger people may also have a limited command of English. 7. Kyushu Island has brought a lot to the nation’s dining table. After all, it is here that ramen — Japan’s globally celebrated comfort food — was born. And while the rest of the country doesn’t have a strong street food culture, it is definitely alive and kicking in Fukuoka. Other prefectures have their own signature dishes — from Hita City’s own take on the yakisoba to Nagasaki’s foreign-influenced delicacies. In this video, we’ll show you around Kyushu Island and give you a taste of some of the food delights that you shouldn’t miss in this part of Japan! But in this batch, we’ll cover only those in the northern half of the island. - This video was shot before the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of foreign visitors who choose to explore Japan by rental car has continued to increase in recent years. Although renting a car is of course a great way to travel freely on your own schedule, driving a car in a foreign country whose rules and customs you are not yet familiar with does come with some degree of risk. So in this video NEXCO-West (the company operating many of the expressways in Western Japan) will provide some useful information for visitors from abroad, such as how to take and make the most of the region’s expressways, as well as the special discount KEP expressway pass. In this video Sam and Kay will depart from Fukuoka Airport and take the expressway and the Yamanami Highway, one of the best and most scenic routes to the breathtakingly beautiful natural scenery of Mt. Daikanbo, located in the Aso area of Kumamoto Prefecture. At the end of the video we have also included some photographs of some of the best natural sightseeing spots throughout the Kyushu region. So to those of you currently considering renting a car and taking the expressway in Japan, watch closely and take careful note of the information provided so you can prepare for a safe, pleasant and stress-free journey driving through Japan. *Visitors from abroad must have an international driving permit in order to drive in Japan. 7 Days in Kyushu! A travel vlog of our 7-day itinerary in Kyushu Japan. More detailed videos on Kyushu in my Kyushu playlist (link below). Our trip began in Fukuoka. Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest city with a population of 1.5 Million. Fukuoka is the "gateway" city to Kyushu. Fukuoka has the biggest airport, and train links to the Shinkansen to the rest of Japan. Most trips to Kyushu begin and end in Fukuoka. We spent 2 days in Fukuoka, visited the Dazaifu Temple where we were caught by a crew from a Japanese Morning Television show. We ate lots of Hakata ramen in Fukuoka, and pudding! Fukuoka also has lots of shopping in the Hakata JR Station, and the Tenjin neighborhood. We went on a boat tour in Yanagawa, ate some eel, and saw the most amazing fire festival performance! After Fukuoka we rented a car and drove to Nagasaki where we toured Nakasaki's Chinatown, saw the famous spectacles bridge, learned about the former Dutch trading post, and ate delicious pork belly buns. We spent a night in Nagasaki. We then drove to the Mt. Aso region and stayed at a 100 year old traditional Japanese Ryokan hotel (Sozankyo). It started to snow on this day, which made for fun driving! This began our 3 night Onsen Hotel spree! The next night we stayed at the Yamakizuki Hotel in Kurokawa Onsen Town which has the most amazing outdoor hot spring bath that we have ever been in! Our final night was spent in Yufuin another small (less than 20 room) Onsen hotel. This hotel, the Yufuin Gettouan had a private onsen bath attached to our room. Our final day we spent exploring Yufuin town before taking the Shinkansen to Osaka. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of Nanatsuboshi Cruise Train - Seven Stars in Kyushu - and we were lucky to participate on a test run to see the recently completed refurbishments and experience the new four-day, three-night route. Words cannot describe how gorgeous this train is, nor can we explain how impeccable the service was, how delectable the meals were, nor how much fun the excursions were - but this short video can! Take our word for it, but if you don't note that the Seven Stars in Kyushu was voted the top luxury train in the world for the last two consecutive years (2021, 2022) by the readers of Condé Nast Traveller magazine. On the new route, we stopped in Yufuin, Oita Prefecture, Aso, Kumamoto, then took a ferry to Unzen, Nagasaki Prefecture, and then traveled back to Oita before returning to Hakata in Fukuoka. This video shows just a sampling of the many scenes and some of the activities. It’s really something that has to be experienced in person, and I hope someday you can.
